Pump and treat is one of the most well established and widely used remediation
technologies for containment and removal of dissolved groundwater contaminants.
The pump and treat groundwater remediation approach is used at about
three-quarters of the Superfund sites where groundwater is contaminated
and at many sites where groundwater has been impacted bypetroleum hydrocarbons
or solvents. Although the effectiveness of pump and treat systems has
sometimes been called into question, after several decades of use, this
approach remains a necessary component of most groundwater cleanup efforts
and is applicable primarily for plume containment and secondarily for
aquifer restoration under ideal conditions.
